Just a preview of what's to come?

Wondering about how you'd survive if the power never came back on? We have become so dependent on electricity that the whole world would be crippled! Only those peoples who have never become dependent on electricity would be able to survive without some very serious adjustments! The majority of folks, especially those living in cities, would really be facing life-threatening challenges! Chaos and violence would reign! Really a thought-provoking book! À real page turnèŕ

I was on the edge of my seat. Great action! Joey is à great writer. I felt like I was fighting right along with the meñ. This book by Joey Wells starts off at a good clip and revolves around Marcus and Julia Smith and their two children, a 12 year old daughter and 15 year old son. The father is at work in Detroit when an EMP blast occurs, destroying the electronic interface of what I am assuming is the entire country. He rushes home to his wife and together they go back into the city to get their children from school. Eventually they “borrow” a Humvee from a friend who is out of town and plan on traveling to a homestead of which only Marcus is aware.

Cons:
The author does not tell you where they are going, and the timeline is not provided, so the reader has no idea how much time has passed. The book is full of grammatical errors, and frequently (1-2 times per page) extra words are thrown in the text or are missing. I found myself several times trying to figure out what Wells was trying to say. A couple of time jumps were included, but again that information is hard to understand from the text. The character development is very poor with very little to no background of any of the characters provided.

Pros:
The book opens with the father at work, and the action begins almost immediately. Even when there is no dialogue between the characters, there is usually some sort of action happening. The story does move quickly, and that is refreshing. I liked this in the beginning.

Recommendation:
Ultimately I would not consider “Survive the Night” one of the better books in the apocalyptic genre. There is too much information missing.

How and where do they get their food? Where did they get all the fuel needed for the vehicle? If Marcus’ father left him so many letters for him to receive after he died, why did Marcus only read one? Why did the 12 year old daughter act like she was a little girl one minute and then a young woman in her twenties the next? How many people were at the homestead? Was it still a commune? How did the one person who hated Marcus come to change his mind and like Marcus? Where did the enemy named Raul come from, along with his 300 men?

I found this book extremely frustrating to read as it was full of contradictions. Some people may like this book as a quick read, especially if they don’t mind a text full of errors with only one short plot line. Unfortunately it wasn’t for me. I am generously giving this two stars because I thought the concept was a good one, even though the execution was poor. Not a terrible book, but so many editing mistakes that it was a bother to read. Also very predictable. I wouldn't want to recommend it, except for someone who wants a quick, predictable read. 306 This is a standalone book and an OK story. It has a rather standard EMP premise, though apparently only Marcus really knows what is going on. The city goes to hell almost immediately, with no one else trying to understand what is happening; they just start looting, killing and destroying. Marcus and Julia show up to their kids' school very soon after the event and already there are nearby explosions and mayhem. In the debate about taking the kids out of school to somewhere else we have this “We don’t have a choice, the school will still crumble under the violent bastards and God knows what kind of sick individuals. I expected to hear ominous music with that one. Of course, there is the land and commune owned by Marcus's deceased father and of course, he becomes an integral part in that safe environment. Only the men seem to have meetings to decide what to do (there is a half-hearted attempt to insinuate the women have their own meetings and use their female wiles to influence the men). Only the men are able to be designated for the defense of the compound, even though a number of times, Marcus says Julia is a good shot. There had been a debate as to whether they needed the women to fight, and it caused a major uproar amongst the men. . The bad guys and the good guys are quite one-dimensional and actually boring. The story is sprinkled with editing issues and the prose is stiff and awkward at times with a tendency to just mansplain everything rather than have the action as part of the story. Some of the dialogue is cringeworthy and Americans don't say Bloody Hell. OK book but can't recommend it. Kindle Edition

An EMP means the end of the world as they know it for a family who fights to survive. When disaster strikes in the form of an EMP, Marcus and his family flee to their remote cabin in the mountains. Survive The Night (EMP Survival in a Powerless World, #29)
