leaders do what they do, read what they read.I sought this book out because a mentor told me that it was required reading in virtually all military schools and war colleges. Many leaders have military experience, and are likely to have read this at some point. Moreover, those that give military advice to people like the President of the United States are going to have read this, and it will have an impact on their decisions and thinking. As others have noted, this book is not an easy read. This book is the kind that one should read from start to finish, and then read it again, because even those of us with high retention will learn the second time through. If one enjoys reading history, this book should be on the short list to read, because war has been a very important part of world history, and if the news are any indicator, wars aren't about to stop any time soon. While I'm thinking about it, please make sure you thank those that fight for the cause of freedom and liberty, at every opportunity. 464 pages This book is o.k, but as our window to perceive how battle was carried back in the Napoleonic era of Europe. It fall short of its author's wish, which seems to dish this book as a book for the in depth study of war. As the Hellenistic / Greco Roman pjhilsophical way dictates, and influence caucasian culture Art of War, which as Eastern wisdom dictates us to perceive everything in wholesome, including sipritually, study war as and in timeless concept, whose practice differ as ages differ, but the principals remain the same at the most.Still, this is a good historical reading, if that'd be fine with you. 9780140444278 I don't know if the translation is bad or Clausewitz could not express himself clearly but the book is hard to read. What do you make of paragraphs like the following one:'But after his [Frederick the Great's] skilful application of the system of husbanding his resources had shown the powers allied against him, through a seven years' struggle, that the actual expenditure of strength far exceeded what they had at first anticipated, they made peace.'Since Clausewitz is considered a classic, I am much inclined to blame it on the translator. Everyone who studied German knows that you can't translate word for word. German grammar is different. They put verbs in weird places.I don't know if other translations are any better but this one is definitely hard to read. On War (Penguin Classics) I did not purchase this item English I am not qualified to critique this classic book. Very insightful. English
