for me it was the best translation i think Hodgens is the best translation available however it was difficult for me to read this one was much easier to read and from other reviews i've read is pretty accurate given Gallacher's background It also arrived very uickly The Cloud of Unknowing (TEAMS Middle English Texts, Kalamazoo) A fantastic resource for those who practice contemplationand a great reality check for those using any of the various modern translations from the Middle English A sure norm to ease the mind that one is not being led astray by the editor's own agendaand as any reader of any modern version can tell from introductions by editors they all have their own concept of what it is all about With this edition the reader can make sure the original author is speaking directly to them or as close as possible in a time so far removed from the very first texts science-nature Excellent content and teaching The Cloud of Unknowing (TEAMS Middle English Texts, Kalamazoo) I put off getting this for some time ambivalent about tackling the Middle English text But I really wanted to go deep into Cloud of Unknowing and so finally took the plungeThere are glosses of the difficult words on each page; somehow I did not realize that before ordering; had I known that I would have ordered it much sooner than I didThere are some good resources to learn Middle English I found and I am very glad I decided to work with this text If you are thinking also of taking the plunge I can recommend three other books very highlyA Chaucer Glossary by Norman Davis an excellent Middle English Dictionary that is a nice size and inexpensiveChaucer's Language by Simon Horobin a very good book on Middle English in general way than I need in order to read the Cloud of UnknowingA Book of Middle English by JA Burrow A nice primer on ME with excerpts of various texts including an excerpt of Cloud of Unknowing chaps 3 4 and 5 which seem like kind of the heart of Cloud of UnknowingOnce I have a little ME under my belt I will return to a book I got from the library that has a very nice chapter on Cloud of Unknowing as well as chapters on Julian of Norwich and Piers Plowman and others I got through the Cloud chapter but there is a lot to absorb about Middle English mystical texts and teachingsStaging Contemplation by Eleanor JohnsonAlso the Penguin translation of Cloud into Present Day English has been very helpful and good for me The different translations and versions and editions of Cloud of Unknowing are definitely different even down to the physicality and typesetting of the book itselfI had previously purchased an inexpensive knockoff version of a Cloud translation thinking to save a couple bucks; the book was literally unreadable because the spacing in the words and sentences was essentially random and incoherent making the book impossible to readAll in all I am really psyched now to learn ME the Cloud of Unknowing in its original form Piers Plowman and Julian of Norwich and Medieval English literature in generalBut it was this text Cloud of Unknowing that propelled me Inward
